Estudou no Colégio da Companhia de Jesus de Bolonha, na Universidade de Pádua e terminou o curso de direito em Roma. Desempenhou diversas funções ao serviço do Papa, foi creado Cardeal de São Nicolau in Carcere, em 1737, perfeito da Congregação da Propaganda Fide e consagrado Bispo de Pádua, em 1743.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eComo papa foi um grande defensor dos direitos da Igreja e fez todos os possíveis para defender a Companhia de Jesus dos ataques que estavam a ser lançados contra ela. Ordenou ao Núncio Apostólico em Portugal que protestasse contra a supressão da Companhia, o que lhe valeu a expulsam, em junho de 1760, por ordem do Marquês de Pombal. Elaborou a Bula \u003cem\u003eApostolicum pascendi\u003c\/em\u003e, em 1765, defendendo os jesuítas e condenando a forma como estavam a ser tratados. Levando avante a reforma e a luta contra o racionalismo Iluminista condenou obras como \u003cem\u003eÉmile\u003c\/em\u003e, de Rousseau, a \u003cem\u003eEncyclopédie\u003c\/em\u003e, de Diderot e d’Alembert e \u003cem\u003eExposition de la doctrine chrètienne\u003c\/em\u003e, de Mésenguy.
