O projecto inseria-se no âmbito da Geografia Linguística europeia da época, de que tinha sido exemplo o Atlas Linguistique de la France dirigido por Jules Gilliéron.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEm 1914 já estava delineado o projecto, mas só em 1930 foram impressos os questionários e entre 1931 e 1936 foram realizados quase todos os inquéritos.
