O autor divide as ciências “puramente” matemáticas: a geometria, a aritmética, a álgebra, a trigonometria e a logarítmica; das ciências físico-matemáticas: a música, a mecânica, a estática, a hidrostática, a arquitetura civil, a arquitetura militar, a artilharia, a ótica, a geografia, a astronomia e a cronografia.

The last pages contain engravings 9 to 11.

The 144 unnumbered pages of the eighth volume, between 80 and 81, contain 59 tables with astronomical data, still according to a geocentrist view. They are grouped into two types: the first 10 are dedicated to describing the Primer Movil (Primum Mobile) which would be the outermost sphere of the geocentric model, containing the fixed stars; the remaining 49 contain detailed data about the movement of the seven known planets, ranging from Mercury to Saturn and also including the Moon and the Sun.

The Compendio mathematico is one of Tosca"s main works. It was reprinted several times during the 18th century, which attests to the work"s excellent reception and dissemination throughout the Spanish-speaking world. Its publication represented an important milestone because it publicised a large part of the developments and the new methodological and cognitive panorama opened up by the Scientific Revolution, which had received scant attention in works printed in Spain.

The first edition of Compendio mathematico came out between 1709 and 1715, this being its first reprint. During the 18th century it was published again in 1757 and 1794, always in 9 volumes.

In this work, many of the most important chapters of the new science, from Galileo"s kinematics to Kepler"s optics, are explained in a long and clear way, in Romanic language and based on modern assumptions, in which maths is seen as a language and observation and experimentation as methodological criteria, showing a clear effort to make a didactic presentation of the classical subjects.

The author divides the 'purely' mathematical sciences: geometry, arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry and logarithmics; from the physical-mathematical sciences: music, mechanics, statics, hydrostatics, civil architecture, military architecture, artillery, optics, geography, astronomy and chronography. Tosca doesn"t include astrology among these, as he doesn"t consider it a science, although he does dedicates it the last 'treatise' of the Compendio, in which he sets out his opinions and reservations.

In the pure maths subjects, the study of the first six Books of Euclid stands out, along with the eleventh and twelfth; the inclusion of combinatorics, the geometric study on conics (the first work in Castilian on this subject), the attention paid to the geometric analysis of Hugo de Omerique, the character of the very modern notation used in algebra and the reference to the treatises of Michel Rolle and Jean Prestet on solving equations.

With regard to the physical sciences, it is worth highlighting Galileo"s study of kinematics (bodies in free fall and their movement on inclined planes, as well as the movement of projectiles); Torricelli"s and Pascal"s experiments (hydrostatics); the balance and movement of fluids; some measuring instruments, such as the barometer and the thermometer; hydrometry and hydrography, based on the work of Domenico Guglielmini and other authors; Kepler"s geometric optics; as well as a very detailed study of one of the main instrumental achievements in the field of optics - the invention of the telescope and microscope - based on Cavalieri, Zahn, Milliet Dechales and Eustachio Divini.

Relating to astronomy, one of the oldest natural sciences and to which more than one volume is devoted (Tratado de Astronomia in vol. VII and Tratado de Astronomia Prática in the first part of vol. VIII), Tosca is skilful and cautious in his approach to the question of the Earth"s movement, which at the time was still a matter of controversy. He presents both Ptolemy"s (geocentrist) and Copernicus" (heliocentrist) systems, repeatedly explaining the interpretation of various astronomical problems in the light of each, but making it clear in the first few pages that there is no reason to interpret the Holy Scriptures, which attribute movement to the sun and stability to the earth, in a metaphorical way. In the more theoretical problems, the author"s preference for the heliocentrist model is evident. However, in the more practical aspects of astronomy, relating to the prediction and movement of bodies in the celestial sphere, Tosca preferentially uses geocentrist terms and approaches, such as the tables in the eighth volume, where the Moon and Sun are considered to be planets. The quality of this part of the work far surpasses all previous texts published in Spain, including the Esphera en comun celeste, y terraquea of Zaragoza, constituting a complete manual of observational astronomy.

It is important to note the absence of references to the work of Newton, his contemporary, who made extremely important contributions to various fields dealt with here. This omission is particularly noticeable in the study of infinitesimal calculus, optics and astronomy.

Tomás Vicente Tosca (Valencia, 1651 - 1723) was a mathematician, physicist, astronomer and cartographer. He studied and taught at the University of Valencia, graduating as Master of Arts and Doctor of Theology. He was ordained a priest in 1678 and joined the Congregation of St Philip Neri, where he held important positions. From 1717 to 1720 he held the position of vice-rector at the University (which could not appoint a rector due to the loss of 'patronage' as a repressive measure by Philip V against the Austracists who had supported Archduke Charles in the War of the Spanish Succession).

He belonged to a group of Spanish authors who, aware of their country"s scientific backwardness, were concerned with spreading the great developments that took place during the Scientific Revolution, of which this work is a paradigmatic example. Another project that shows this same desire was the creation of a maths school, around 1697, on the premises of the Congregation, which was attended by young noblemen from the city.

His printed work also includes the Compendium Philosophicum of similar importance, recognition and success.

Matías Antonio de Irala Yuso (Bergara, Guipúzcoa, 1680 - Madrid, 1753) was a prolific painter, draughtsman and engraver who belonged to the Order of St Francis of Paola, which he joined in 1704. In 1731 he published a treatise entitled Método sucinto y compendioso, of great influence on Baroque artistic formation. Today he is mostly known for his religious prints, as his pictorial work has not been preserved.

Buenaventura Pedro Abarca de Bolea Ximénez de Urrea y Bermúdez de Castro (Zaragoza, 1699 - 1742), 9th Count of Aranda, Marquis of Torres, lord of the Tenencia de Alcalatén. His son, Pedro Pablo, 10th Count of Aranda, became one of the most important and influential figures of the 18th century in Spain.

Referências/References:

Palau (1990) VII, 60.

SBN [Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale] - IT/ICC/NAPE/069503.

BNE [Biblioteca Nacional de España] - Mima0000107352.

Víctor Navarro Brotons, Gloria Solache Vilela e Ximo Todolí Pérez de León, Diccionario Biográfico electrónico (DB~e) de la Real Academia de la Historia.
