A primeira edição foi publicada em Antuérpia, no ano de 1624. Um dos livros de emblemática religiosa mais influente desde o século XVII até aos nossos dias. Foram publicadas 42 edições em latim, desde 1624 a 1757, assim como traduções para muitas línguas, alemão, inglês, espanhol, holandês, francês, húngaro, italiano, polaco e português, até 1843.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJosé Adriano Freitas de Carvalho destaca a importância desta obra, em especial a sua vasta influência, que não se resume aos domínios da literatura de espiritualidade, mas se estende a todos os domínios da emblemática e não só nos meios católicos, mas também nos protestantes. A sua influência foi também muito grande na iconografia, na teoria e prática das artes plásticas dos séculos XVII e XVIII.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA sua influência estendeu-se a Portugal, onde José Pereira Veloso publicou, em 1687, os Desejos Piedosos, que têm a mesma estrutura e se inspiram nos Pia Desideria, tendo além de emblemas e meditações em prosa, um conjunto de cânticos da autoria de Frei António das Chagas.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs páginas preliminares contêm a dedicatória do autor ao papa Urbano VIII; duas poesias em louvor do papa Urbano VIII, em latim de Maximiliano Habbequio e de Saldvini Cabiliavo; uma gravura emblemática e um Desiderium de introdução, em verso.
