It captures a city that was undergoing rapid transformation: streets, public buildings, hotels, gardens, shops, the harbour, the beach, markets and various aspects of the population, such as photographs of the Hotel Club, the Post Office, Praça 7 de Março (now Praça 25 de Junho), Ponta Vermelha, Polana beach and other locations, allowing a comparison between the city of 1901 and present-day Maputo.

Joseph Lazarus (1876–1940) and his elder brother, Maurice Lazarus (1866–1949), were of British Jewish origin, hailing from the Sunderland area in north-east England. The family emigrated to South Africa and, towards the end of the 19th century, the two brothers took up photography, passing through Barberton before settling in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, around 1899. They were pioneering photographers in Mozambique, where they founded the J. & M. Lazarus studio. Through their photography, they documented urban growth, official events, local communities and everyday life in the city, whilst also producing picture postcards and photographic albums of great historical value.

Their work became an important source for the study of Mozambique’s colonial history; among other things, they documented with photographs the visit to Mozambique by Prince D. Luiz Filipe, heir to the Portuguese throne, in July–September 1907. They subsequently moved their business to Lisbon, where they opened ‘Photographia Ingleza’, a studio renowned for producing portraits of the Portuguese elite. A receipt dated 1929 attests to the continuity of their work and the prestige they had achieved in Portugal. Today, the legacy of the Lazarus brothers is widely recognised by the Portuguese Centre of Photography and by researchers, and is considered an important documentary heritage for the study of photography, history and the collective memory of Mozambique and Portugal.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1066/5617/0316/files/2608RS066_1_f7893237-c2f5-4379-84c2-fc672554da84.jpg?v=1789924086
