[EN] In 4º. 24 x 17 cm. This Royal Typography, that had a short life, was created to rise Portugal to the typographic level (in what concerns scientific promotion) of the most important European countries.

The first Star Atlas based on the Atlas Coelesti was published in 1729, only 10 years after the death of Flamsteed, by his widow assisted by Joseph Crosthwait (Joseph Crosthwait & Abraham Sharp). It was preceded by the “Stellarum inerrantium Catalogus Britannicus" (or simply the “British Catalogue”, published in 1725 and presenting 2,919 stars).

This Flamsteed Atlas may be considered the first modern Atlas, presenting about 3,300 stars, the double of those reported by and for the first time, the stars are located by their celestial equatorial coordinates: right ascension and declination, with the grid on the map overlapping the ecliptic pole. This innovation was possible by introducing the observations of the pendulum clock, thus allowing to find out the difference of the right ascension from the difference between the time of the clock and the passage of the stars over the meridian. A century before, Bayer included in his Atlas the two Magellan clouds. Flamsteed in the map of Andromeda, draws a star on the right, Galaxy M31, the first non-stellar object to be depicted in a star map of an important Atlas.

One of the main motivations of Flamsteed to make this Atlas was to correct the depiction of the constellations made by Bayer in his “Uranometria” on the year 1603. Bayer depicts the figures seen from behind (and not from the front, like it was done since Ptolemy), thus inverting the location of the stars causing unnecessary confusions.

This edition had an immediate success, becoming the standard reference for professional astronomers for almost a century. However, three protests were made: its high price; its big size, making it difficult to handle; and the low artistic quality (a lot of criticism on the drawings by James Thornhill, especially the depiction of the constellation of Aquarius). Because of this, Dr. John Bevis tried to improve the Atlas and in 1745 he produces the "Uranographia Britannica", smaller, updated with notes and more artistic images. This Atlas, however, has never been officially published and until now, only 16 copies are known to exist.

Finally, the changes to the position of the stars (the initial observations were made in the last decade of the 17th century) were updated in 1770 by the French engineer Nicolas Fortin, supervised by the astronomers Le Monnier and Messier, members of the Royal Academy of Science in Paris. The new version, named Fortin-Flamsteed, had one third of the original size, but kept the same map structure. There also have been made some artistic retouch on some illustrations (namely in Andromeda, Virgo and Aquarius). The names of the constellations are in French and not in Latin and the Atlas includes some nebulas that were discovered after Flamsteed died. In 1795 Merchain and Lalande published a new version with more stars and nebulae.

Â

Inocêncio II, 113 “CUSTODIO GOMES VILLAS BOAS, Cavalleiro da Ordem de Christo, Brigadeiro d'Artilheria, Lente de Mathematicas jubilado na Academia Real de Marinha e ultimamente Governador da praça de Valença.
