Maps have hand coloured title cartouches; sea decorated with ships, royal crests held by cherubs, mythological figures and allegorical views, coloured areas mostly contoured to a quick research on the index list of names coming in folio after each map, all maps coming with geographical frame grades and just some of them coming with geographical scales and the correspondence to a different counting of miles to different countries. Relief shown pictorially.

The map of America (folio 2) is one of the best preserved of this Atlas with the title «Novissima et Accuratissima Sptentrionalis ac Meridionalis Americae Descriptio, multis Locis recentibus aucta et correcte divisa in Omnes Partes Hodierna Per Fredericum de Witt Amstelodami» coming with mythological figures of snakes (main worship deity in America) and an allegorical view of the Indian mining gold. On the left top of the map there is a hand coloured cartouche with the history of the discovery of America: «America nomen habet ab Americo Vesputio, Florentino, qui Emmanuelis Portugalia Regiis auspiciis à Gadibus anno 1497 profectus primus ex Europaeis, quantum quidem constat, eam ingressus est. Quan quan prior Christophorus Columbus Genovensis, anno 1492….». (We get from this that Americo Vespuccio was sent to discover this continent by the King of Portugal). This map shows the territory of North America mostly unknown: California is viewed as an Island; the continental territory is not known beyond the great lakes; the present day northern states are chartered in pink as Nova Francia (New France) and New York is still known as New Amsterdam.

The convention of the hand painted colours and contour are mostly in order to the reader to have a quick research on the index list of names coming in the folio after each map. The colours - pink, yellow and brown* - are all original but the brown one. The brown* is a foxing (or fading away) of a white blue tint made from copper. On the reverse of this map (as well as all the others) we can see the natural foxing caused by this ink, which led to minor restorations on this folium in avoid the natural power of corrosion of the copper ink.

Frederick de Witt (1630 – 1706) was a cartographer and artist who drew, printed and sold maps from ca. 1648 until his death at the end of July 1706, Frederick de Wit lived and worked in Amsterdam.
