Encontram-se aqui reunidos mapas, planos, perspectivas, panoramas dos principais editores locais da época (incluindo Johann Friedrich Probst, Matthäus Seutter, Georg Christoph Kilian, Johann Michael Roth e outros). Roth publica-a como uma colecção homogénea. A colecção vai além de um mero registo do terremoto e tsunami, proporcionando, no entanto, uma excelente visão geral da topografia portuguesa e espanhola em geral, com muitas vistas da cidade e planos de fortificação.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEstima-se que o terramoto de Lisboa tenha sido de uma magnitude entre 8,5 e 9 na escala de Richter, com epicentro no Oceano Atlântico, a cerca de 300 km a sudoeste de Lisboa. A maioria dos prédios da cidade foi destruída e dezenas de milhares de pessoas morreram ali e nas regiões vizinhas. O tsunami resultante pode ter morto mais pessoas do que os danos diretos do próprio terremoto.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNa segunda parte da obra encontra-se o magnífico mapa de Augsburgo, desenhado por Johann Thomas Kraus (1697-1775) e publicado pela Matthäus Seutter (1678-1756). The sheet is further filled with scrollwork decoration with oval portraits in the upper corners, winged angels in the lower corners, 4 more angels plus 2 faces in the scrollwork.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePasted in the center of the front wrapper is an engraving of the Augsburg pine cone flanked by Neptune with his trident and a river God with an oar, above a city view with cornucopias (10 x 6.5 cm), with a manuscript label below: ‘1755 et 1756.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe whole set is kept in a finely produced modern tanned sheepskin box with the form of a book, the spine with 7 raised bands and a red morocco label, a single brass fastening, and the interior and what would be the edges of the paper lined with marbled paper combining Stormont, zebra and Spanish patterns.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn extremely rare and stunning display of the vibrant graphic and topographic trade in mid-18th-century Augsburg, the main part devoted primarily to the earthquake and tsunami that stroke Lisbon and many other cities in Portugal, southwest Spain and northwest Africa on November 1\u003csup\u003est\u003c\/sup\u003e, 1755. It brings together maps, plans, prospects, bird\"s-eye views and other views originating from most of the leading Augsburg print publishers of the day, including Johann Friedrich Probst, Matthäus Seutter, Georg Christoph Kilian, Johann Michaël Roth and others, Roth (d. 1766) bringing the material together and publishing it as a collection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe earthquake of Lisbon is estimated to have had a magnitude between 8.5 and 9 on the Richter scale, with epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean, about 300 km southwest of Lisbon. Most of the city's buildings were destroyed and tens of thousands of people died there and in the surrounding regions. The resulting tsunami may have killed more than the direct damage from the earthquake itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe present collection brings the destruction into sharp graphic focus, with many views, often including before and after pictures, of Lisbon, Meknes (Mequines) and Fez in Morocco. Several views show looters or others, who tried to exploit the chaos, hanging at the gallows.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, the collection goes beyond a mere record of the earthquake and the tsunami, providing an excellent overview of Portuguese and Spanish topography in general, with many city views, plans and fortification plans. Several were taken from existing series and therefore have the number from the series on the plate, but those showing the earthquake were of course quite new.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRoth\"s Wahrhaffte Abbildung provides 14 views and plans on one sheet and his Fortgesetzte Abbildung goes beyond Spain and Portugal by adding 15 views and plans of cities mostly in Germany and Switzerland. The map of Portugal includes an inset map showing the Brazilian colonies. Several of the maps and city views include coats of arms, the large map of Spain including 17 maps, covering not only the royal arms and separate arms of Portugal, but also those of the provinces. As in the Basel copy and probably all copies, Johann Christian Leopold's view of Lisbon is printed on a separate slip and pasted over the blank lower half of the page.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough the Augsburg map and series of Augsburg architectural views have been earlier published in separate, they clearly form an integral second part of the publication, because the engraved title-page explicitly refers to them, but we have not located another copy that includes them. This second part begins with the magnificent large map of Augsburg, drawn by Johann Thomas Kraus (1697-1775) and published by Matthäus Seutter (1678-1756), perhaps ca. 1750. It is followed by 4 sheets, here uncut, but clearly intended to be divided into 12 pieces each to make a book of 48 numbered prints, beginning with an engraved title-page in a lovely decorated cartouche with 4 classical gods and a female figure representing Augsburg.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe title-page notes that the publisher can supply bound copies if required (‘gebunden zu bekommen’). But it also seems likely that the present copy was supplied by the publisher in its wrapper, made of the so-called gold brocade paper. Augsburg raised the production of this type of decorated paper to an art in the mid-18th-century, and the present example is a fine specimen (two whole sheets, for the front and back wrapper, printed from the same block). This pattern, unsigned, is not recorded in Haemmerle or Heijbroek \u0026amp; Greven.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have located only two other copies. The one at Basel University Library has exactly the same make-up and order as ours but lacks the large map of Augsburg and the folding sheets with Augsburg architectural views. The copy at the Biblioteca Nacional in Lisbon lacks even more sheets, apparently containing only 7 or 8 sheets in total.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn very good condition, with only the spine of the wrapper somewhat tattered.
