[EN] In 8° of 19.2x13 cm. A new edition was published in 1783, then another in 1817, and yet another one in 1849 with a new translation by Father Domingos Lopes da Costa e Cruz.

The translator of the Latin edition published in 1566 (CATECHISMVS, Ex Decreto Concilii Tridentini, Ad Parochos, Pii Quinti Pont. Max. Ivssv editvs. Romae, In aedibus Populi Romani, apud Paulum Manutium, MDLXVI) was Cristovão de Matos, Provisor of the Archbishopric of Lisbon, whose name does not appear on the title page or elsewhere in the work, but who is mentioned in the approbation of Friar Bartolomeu Ferreira. The translation is considered a model of classic Portuguese at the level of the prose of his great contemporary writers. The catechism contains a Proémio, and four parts: The Articles of Faith, The Sacraments, The Commandments and the Prayer.

A work of extraordinary value and great importance for the study of the reception in Portugal of the decisions taken at the Council of Trent, namely in in what concerned the condemnation of the Protestant churches" ideas on the sacraments and on the Pope"s power. Its continued use (which is clear from the small number of copies that have survived to the present day) had a great influence in Portugal on the forms of living out the Catholic religion, marked by the allegiance to the Pope, as head of a centralised Church, and which at the same time presupposed the strengthening of the powers and image of the Bishops.

The translation into Portuguese was made to fulfil the determinations of the Council of Trent, to spread the doctrine contained in this work and for the use of the ecclesiastics of the Archbishopric of Lisbon. The Archbishop Miguel de Castro determines in his provision that all the churches of his diocese should have a copy of this work and stipulates the punishments for the ecclesiastics who do not comply with that decision. He also determined that the clergy should explain the contents of the catechism to the congregation. In a society where only six per cent of the people could read, the oral transmission of knowledge was decisive for the wide dissemination of written works, for the formation and education of the inhabitants of each country, and to ensure the preservation of the religious integrity of the Kingdom, at the time of the division of the Church between Catholics and Protestants.

Ref.: Iberian Books 66465, IB5486; USTC, nº 345023; D.
