[EN] 7 volumes, 21 × 13.5 cm. vi, 458; vii, [i blank], 479; vii, [i blank], 472; viii, 490; viii, 393; vii, [i blank], 451; vii, [i blank], xxviii, 472 pp.

Full leather bindings, with two labels – one bearing the volume number, the other the title of the work and the author’s initials – and gilt tooled spines. The final volume is prefaced by a short biography of Jean-Baptiste Say, written by Charles Comte.

Jean-Baptiste Say (Lyon, 1767 – Paris, 1832) was a French economist, advocate of liberalism and academic, and a proponent of a competitive, free-trade system. He began his career as a bank clerk and, at the age of 19, moved to England, where he witnessed the Industrial Revolution, an experience that profoundly influenced him. An admirer of Adam Smith’s work, The Wealth of Nations, Say sought to synthesise Smith’s economic liberalism with the political and philosophical ideals of the French Revolution.

He served on a finance commission under Napoleon’s government, but ultimately refused to support Napoleon Bonaparte’s imperial regime, which he viewed as a betrayal of revolutionary ideals: the authoritarian centralisation of power, state control measures, the imposition of monopolies and regulations that restricted free trade, and the promotion of an economy geared towards military and expansionist interests, which required a rigid financial system and a heavy tax burden to sustain the Empire’s wars. During this period, Say became a cotton manufacturer, running a business that prospered.

With the fall of the Empire and the restoration of the monarchy, Say was able to resume publishing. In 1819 he was appointed professor at the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts, where his lectures resulted in the ‘Complete Course in Practical Political Economy’ (1828–1829); and in 1830 he was appointed professor at the Collège de France, teaching the chair of political economy, created especially for him. When he died in Paris, he was the most famous French economist of his time.

Say’s work is characterised as much by its theoretical foundations as by its practical application. The famous ‘Say’s Law’ or ‘Law of Markets’ encapsulates one of the central ideas of his thinking: ‘Goods are exchanged for goods’, suggesting that supply creates its own demand, a view that profoundly influenced classical economics.
