O seu pai era de origem francesa da cidade de LeÃ£o, o que contribuiu muito para a educaÃ§Ã£o que teve e tambÃ©m para as suas dificuldades de adaptaÃ§Ã£o Ã  sociedade portuguesa, sendo um dos exemplos mais notÃ¡veis dos intelectuais denominados - Estrangeirados. Foi Cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo, Arcediago da Igreja metropolitana de Ã‰vora, Graduado em Teologia e Mestre em Artes pela Universidade da mesma cidade, e Doutor em Direito Civil pela Universidade de Roma, onde viveu a maior parte da sua vida, desde Agosto de 1736 atÃ© falecer. Foi SecretÃ¡rio da LegaÃ§Ã£o Portuguesa junto Ã  CÃºria Romana. A rainha D. Maria I., nomeou-o Deputado honorÃ¡rio do Tribunal da Mesa da ConsciÃªncia e Ordens, por decreto de 11 de Setembro de 1790; foi SÃ³cio da ArcÃ¡dia Romana com o nome de Â«Verenio OrigianoÂ», e da Academia Real das CiÃªncias de Lisboa, eleito em 1780.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEscreveu muitas obras com fins didÃ¡cticos, em latim e obras de crÃ­tica literÃ¡ria e de defesa das suas ideias pedagÃ³gicas e filosÃ³ficas em portuguÃªs, mas a sua obra mais importante e que desencadeou uma prolongada polÃ©mica em que participaram grande nÃºmero de escritores do sÃ©culo XVIII, foi - \u003cem\u003eO Verdadeiro MÃ©todo de Estudar\u003c\/em\u003e, NÃ¡poles, 1748. His father was of French origin from the city of LeÃ³n, which contributed greatly to his education and also to his difficulties in adapting to Portuguese society, being one of the most notable examples of the intellectuals known as 'estrangeirados'. He was a Knight of the Order of Christ, Archdeacon of the Metropolitan Church of Ã‰vora, a graduate in Theology and a Master of Arts from the University of Ã‰vora, and a Doctor of Civil Law from the University of Rome, where he lived for most of his life, from August 1736 until his death. He was Secretary of the Portuguese Legation to the Roman Curia. Queen Maria I appointed him Honorary Member of the Court of the Bureau of Conscience and Orders, by decree of September 11, 1790; he was a Member of the Roman Arcadia under the name of 'Verenio Origiano', and of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, elected in 1780.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe wrote many works for teaching purposes in Latin and works of literary criticism and defense of his pedagogical and philosophical ideas in Portuguese, but his most important work, which sparked a prolonged controversy in which a large number of 18th century writers took part, was - \u003cem\u003eO Verdadeiro MÃ©todo de Estudar\u003c\/em\u003e, NÃ¡poles, 1748.
