Cada gravura representa uma das quatro cruzes de Cristo, utilizada pelos irmãos dos diversos graus da ordem. Esta ordem militar teve origem na extinção da ordem dos Templários.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eContem, alem do prólogo (onde se transcrevem as bulas da fundação da Ordem, e da união do seu mestrado á Coroa, etc.) quatro livros ou partes. Na 1.ª trata da fundação e criação da ordem, com o que lhe diz respeito: na 2.ª do provimento das comendas, obrigações dos comendadores, etc.: na 3.ª da jurisdição eclesiástica, e modo de a exercitar: na 4.ª dos privilégios da ordem terminando com um rol de todas as comendas, e designação do rendimento de cada uma.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTerceira edição desta obra, tendo sido a primeira publicada em 1628, a segunda em 1671 e uma quarta edição em 1746.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA Ordem de Cristo foi fundada pela Bula \u003cem\u003eAd ea ex quibus\u003c\/em\u003e de João XXIII (14-3-1319) em resultado de uma longa negociação sobre o destino dos bens do Templo (Templários) em Portugal. Evitou-se em 1312, quando se extinguiu a Ordem do Templo, que os seus bens na Península fossem entregues aos Hospitalários. O monarca português insistiu (1313-1318) no vínculo dos Templários ao serviço do rei e à defesa do reino. Talvez influenciado pela solução encontrada em Aragão, com a criação da Ordem de Montesa, optou por suplicar (1318) a criação de uma nova milícia de Cristo, sediada em Castro Marim junto à fronteira marítima com as terras dos mouros.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCom recurso às novas soluções técnicas trazidas da Palestina tinha-se erguido o castelo de Tomar (1160-1171) para albergar o convento da Ordem dos Templários. Foi construída uma igreja poligonal (dita Charola) que seguia de perto a Igreja do Santo Sepulcro em Jerusalém. Esta igreja já se encontrava dotada de um selo próprio (1181) e era por vezes citada como o Mosteiro da Ordem (1209), hospedando uma comunidade numerosa. In 1312, when the Order of the Temple became extinct, its assets in the Peninsula were not handed over to the Hospitallers. The Portuguese monarch insisted (1313-1318) on the Templars being linked to the service of the king and the defence of the kingdom.
