For his life of high mysticism and energetic pastoral action he was declared venerable by Pope Clement XI in 1713. The engraving was made in Rome by Friar Diogo Curada, of the Congregation of the Oratory, according to Inocêncio.

Friar Bartolomeu do Quental (Fenais da Luz, Azores, 23 August 1626 - Lisbon, 20 December 1698). He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Évora between 1643 and 1647, graduating in Philosophy in May 1647 and obtaining his doctorate in June. He enrolled in theology course, still at Évora, but moved to Coimbra in 1650, becoming a deacon two years later and preaching to the university students. In December 1652 he was ordained a priest. He began preaching in the Lisbon region with such intensity and quality that, on October 22, 1654, he was appointed chaplain-teacher of the royal chapel and extra-numerary preacher by King John IV, having kept these functions during the following reigns. Along with the tasks he performed at court from that date on, Bartolomeu do Quental continued his itinerant preaching.

To improve the level of the clergy he thought of founding a congregation to change the panorama of priestly life. Between the years 1657-1658 he tried to gather the chaplains and clerics of the Royal Chapel, with the aim of congregating priests who were devout and zealous for the salvation of souls, so that with their example he could attract the people to frequent the spiritual exercises. In 1659, he founded a congregation of priests, dedicated to Our Lady of Greetings, with its own statutes that organised individual and collective life. In 1667, Bartolomeu do Quental prepared the foundation of the Oratory as an "association of secular priests, without any vows". It was approved by a provision of the Archdiocese of Lisbon on January 8, 1668, and on July 16 of that year in Lisbon, at Fangas da Farinha, in Rua Nova do Almada, the Congregation of the Oratory of São Filipe de Néri was born, whose statutes would be approved by Popes Clemente X and Innocent XI. In 1674, the Oratorians moved to the Church of the Holy Spirit in the same street. From Lisbon, the Oratory spread throughout the country, with great incidence in the northern provinces, and implanted in Brazil (Pernambuco) and India (Goa). When he died, without ever leaving Lisbon, victim of pleurisy, he had a reputation as a saint and several miracles were attributed to him after his death. He carried out all his functions with high intellectual erudition and moral stature. An eloquent preacher and sacred writer, he dedicated himself to the Catholic reform of the interior life, through the pedagogy of metaphors, the promotion of mental prayer and the density of being, the denunciation of the deceits of the world, a renewed consciousness of sin, the strengthening of the memory of death, the recovery of the fear of God, the living of the Law of God and the exhortation to a just life, especially on the part of those in authority.

He is the author of a work of high religious and literary level which includes: Meditações sobre a Infãncia, Paixão e Ressurreição de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, 1666, 1679 e 1683; Meditações para os Domingos do ano, 1695 a 1699; e Sermões (a small sample of the many he preached) published in two volumes in the years 1692 and 1698. Meanwhile the Congregation of the Oratory began to compete in the field of teaching with the Jesuits, and in 1755, after the expulsion of the Society of Jesus, replaced the Jesuit Fathers in teaching, but quickly fell in the disfavour of the Marquis of Pombal who forbade them to preach, confess and exercise teaching from 1760 until the fall from power, in 1777, of the King's Joseph Minister.

Francesco Barbazza was an Italian artist and engraver of whom no biographical data is known.
