Totally illuminated with golden Grisaille and golden leaf capital letters. The facsimile reproduces the high quality of the original velum, the evenness of the writing, the capital letters delicately designed and filled with golden leaf and burnished gold. An original and important feature is the abundance and narrative character of the marginal figures: warriors, peasants, nobles, biblical and court scenes. Throughout the books the figures develop a narrative that researchers think is the history of the King of France, Charles VII, and of Joan of Arc in the last episode of the Hundred Years War.

Wilhelm Vrelam’s workshop was active between  1454 and 1482 and this facsimile was edited in 2007, in a partnership between Taberna Libraria,  BNP (Portuguese National Library) and A4 Editions.

Â

Referências/References:

Francisco Correia - Inventário da colecção dos manuscritos iluminados da Biblioteca Nacional.
