He is also known as Thomas the Rhymer or True Thomas, who is considered in legends as a prophet, and as having had an intimate relationship with the Fairy Queen, Titania, considered by the British anthropologist, Sir James Frazer, to be the English version of Diana or Artemis, the goddess of the forests and wildlife.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA photo pictorial book. Work inspired by the romantic history of Portugal and the idyllic landscapes, forests and woodlands in the region of Sintra, hereby adopted by the imaginary of the 19th century English literature and legends. The original photographs illustrating this work are the first to register the various buildings and mystical gardens built in Sintra - by Gerard de Visme, Francis Cook, King Ferdinand II and the Countess of Edla - and particularly the Palace of Monserrate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGerard de Visme leased the farm of Monserrate in 1789 and built a Neo-Gothic palace over the ruins of the former chapel. Francis Cook subleted the Estate in 1856. The effective acquisition of the property took place in 1863. The Palace and Gardens were renovated to serve as a summer residence. In 1995 UNESCO classifies the Sintra Hills, which includes the Park of Monserrate, as a World Heritage Cultural Landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAccording to the words of the architect Gerard Luckhurst, the Garden of Monserrate in Sintra, Portugal, is considered one of the most important English landscape gardens beyond the shores of the British isles. It was founded in the 18th century by Gerard de Visme, a wealthy and cultured merchant, who had made his fortune from the diamond trade of Brazil. Monserrate was briefly occupied by William Beckford and recorded in the poetry by Lord Byron who came to Sintra in 1809. He placed Monserrate firmly on the tourist map. Henceforth, all English visitors to Lisbon would make a pilgrimage to Sintra to see the famous beauty spot. Both house and Garden are described in detail in the 300 page epic rhyming couples entitled Fairy Life and Fairyland, writen by Dr. Thomas Cargill.
