Contém um folheto volante (cor-de-rosa) com anúncio de amostras secas de espécies de árvores, à venda pelo autor, na cidade de Maritzburg, na província de Natal.

Obra de botânica que apresenta os resultados do levantamento das espécies florestais existentes no território de Moçambique e do estudo das respectivas características e potencial valor económico, elaborada a pedido do Governador-geral, Major Freire de Andrade, com vista a apoiar o desenvolvimento económico da Província.

O autor foi um célebre botânico e desenhador artístico (Northfield, Aberdeenshire, Escócia, 1858- Durban, Natal, 1930) que se especializou no estudo das florestas do sul do continente africano.

Contém duas partes, constando a primeira de uma descrição geral do território, indicações sobre a localização e tipos das florestas, descrições específicas das espécies, dos tipos de madeiras, dos produtos que é possível extrair, tal como a àrvore da borracha e os produtos da borracha, e termina com recomendações sobre a utilização destes recursos. A segunda parte é inteiramente constituída por 100 fólios extratexto com desenhos da autoria de Thomas Sim, reproduzindo folhas, troncos, ramagens e aspectos gerais que identificam cada espécie.

Obra de grande rigor, baseada em observações no terreno que se prolongaram durante vários meses, descrevendo as espécies pelas designações científicas internacionalmente aceites. Enriquecida por um magnífico conjunto de desenhos.

Rara e muito importante para o estudo da botânica e da silvicultura em Moçambique e para o conhecimento da história natural deste país africano de língua portuguesa.

Contains a flyer (pink) advertising dried samples of tree species for sale by the author in the town of Maritzburg, Natal province.

A botanical work presenting the results of the survey of the forest species existing in the territory of Mozambique, and the study of their characteristics and potential economic value, prepared at the request of the Governor-General, Major Freire de Andrade, with a view to supporting the economic development of the Province.

The author was a celebrated botanist and artistic designer (Northfield, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, 1858- Durban, Natal, 1930) who specialised in the study of the forests of the southern African continent.

Contains two parts, the first consisting of a general description of the territory, indications on the location and types of forests, specific descriptions of species, types of wood, products that can be extracted, such as the rubber tree and rubber products, and ends with recommendations on the use of these resources. The second part consists entirely of 100 hors-text folios with drawings by Thomas Sim, reproducing leaves, trunks, branches and general features identifying each species.

A work of great rigour, based on field observations extending over several months, describing the species by internationally accepted scientific designations. Enriched by a magnificent set of drawings.

Rare and very important for the study of botany and forestry in Mozambique and for the knowledge of the natural history of this Portuguese-speaking African country.
