Ao douto Fr. Manuel do Cenáculo é que é devida, em grande parte, a realização desta ideia do ministro reformador [o Marquês de Pombal]. Dedicara-se ele [Cenáculo], com Frei Nicolau Belém e Frei José Santa Rita Durão, ao estudo da língua santa com o fim de verterem em linguagem o Antigo Testamento. Comissões, de que depois foi encarregado, obstaram a que levasse a efeito o seu pensamento. Mas nem por isso deixou de entregar-se ao estudo da língua hebraica, e de estimular outros confrades ao mesmo estudo. O Convento de Jesus, pertencente à Terceira Ordem de Portugal de que Frei Manuel do Cenáculo era Provincial, era nessa época notável por nele se cultivar não só a língua hebraica, mas em geral as línguas orientais, principalmente o árabe e o siríaco. E a visita do judeu marroquino Abraham Ben-Isai, muito instruído no hebraico e no caldaico, em 1768, ao Convento de Jesus, onde começou logo a dar lições de hebraico; e a vinda, para o mesmo convento, de D. Paulo Hodar, presbítero castelhano, educado no Colégio dos Maronitas em Roma, para ensinar aos religiosos aquelas línguas, concorreram muitissimo para os progressos das línguas orientais e das respectivas literaturas. Na língua hebraica tornaram-se pincipalmente notáveis, além dos já indicados, Frei Gregório José Viegas, Frei Miguel da Silva, Frei José Sanches, Frei Francisco da Paz e D. João da Encarnação, cónego regrante de Santo Agostinho [e autor desta obra Hoc Est: Gramatica Lingua Sanctae]. No Convento de Jesus, porém, não só se cultivava o estudo da língua hebraica, como assim dizíamos, cultivavasse também o estudo das outras linguas orientais faladas pelo povos sujeittos à coroa de Portugal, e aonde os religiosos se viam obrigados a levar a luz do Evangelho. It is to scholar Fr. Manuel do Cenáculo that the realization of this idea of the reforming minister [the Marquis of Pombal] is due in large part. He had dedicated himself with Friar Nicolau Belém and Friar José Santa Rita Durão to the study of the Holy Language for the purpose of translating the Old Testament. Commissions, which he was later charged with, prevented him from carrying out his thinking. But, nevertheless, he gave himself up to the study of the Hebrew language, and to encourage other confreres in the same study. The Convent of Jesus, belonging to the Third Order of Portugal of which Brother Manuel was Provincial, was at this time remarkable for the cultivation not only of the Hebrew language but of the Eastern languages, mainly Arab and Syriac. Also very important was the visit of the Moroccan Jew, Abraham Ben-Isai - who was very knowledgeable in Hebrew and Chaldean - in 1768, to the Convent of Jesus, where he soon began to teach Hebrew; and the coming to the same convent of Don Paulo Hodar, a Castillian priest, educated at the College of the Maronites in Rome, to teach those languages to the monks, contributed greatly to the progress of the Eastern languages and their literatures. In the Hebrew language, in addition to those already mentioned, Friar Gregório José Viegas, Friar Miguel da Silva, Friar José Sanches, Friar Francisco da Paz and Dom João da Encarnação, the canon of St. Augustine [and author of this book Hoc Est : Gramma Lingua Sanctae] became noticed. In the Convent of Jesus, however, not only was the study of the Hebrew language cultivated, as we have said, but also the study of the other Eastern languages spoken by the populations subject to the crown of Portugal, and where the religious were obliged to carry the light of the Gospel.
