He is the author of many books on the Old Testament (he defended that Moses could not be the author of the whole Pentateuch) and on the New Testament. He got involved in serious controversies with Protestants and Catholics, like Bossuet in France and Jansenistics, having published his works under pseudonym. He published a French translation of the Bible.
