Este volume faz parte da primeira edição francesa, tendo sido a primeira edição em inglês publicada em Londres de 1736 a 1765.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEsta tentativa monumental de elaborar uma História Universal foi um marco na historiografia, pois o seu valor científico deve-se a uma comparação e citação sistemática das muitas fontes bibliográficas consultadas. Ainda que seja centrada na Europa, esta história vai pela primeira vez abordar, com equilíbrio, a totalidade do mundo conhecido no século XVIII. Na época da sua publicação foram muito valorizados os volumes da história antiga e das civilizações clássicas, no entanto actualmente são os volumes, ainda que isolados, das histórias nacionais, que têm um grande valor, pelo facto de terem dado relevância a cada história dentro de um contexto de “mundialização” e universalidade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA História de Portugal encontra-se completa, tal como o texto nos diz, começando pela criação do Condado de Portugal no tempo de Afonso VI de Leão e Castela, e terminando com a crise da sucessão no reinado de D. José I, a execução dos Távoras, a expulsão dos Jesuítas e a crise diplomática que envolveu Portugal na guerra entre a França e a Inglaterra. This volume is part of the first French edition, the first English edition having been published in London from 1736 to 1765.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis monumental attempt to draw up a Universal History was a milestone in historiography, since its scientific value is due to a systematic comparison and citation of the many bibliographical sources consulted. Although it is centred on Europe, this history will for the first time take a balanced look at the whole of the known world in the 18th century. At the time of its publication, the volumes on ancient history and classical civilisations were highly valued, but today it is the volumes, albeit isolated, on national histories that are of great value, because they have given relevance to each history within a context of 'globalisation' and universality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe History of Portugal is complete, as the text tells us, starting with the creation of the County of Portugal in the time of Afonso VI of León and Castile, and ending with the succession crisis during the reign of King José I, the execution of the Távoras, the expulsion of the Jesuits and the diplomatic crisis that involved Portugal in the war between France and England.
