Durante a sua expedição ao Brasil fez escala nas Canárias, onde ficou muito mais tempo do que o previsto. Berthelot dedicou-se ao estudo da História Natural das ilhas e recebeu a colaboração de Barker-Webb, sendo possível publicar o primeiro volume da Histoire Naturelle, em Génova, no ano de 1835. Berthelot, em 1845, fundou a Société d’Ethnologique, voltou a Tenerife em 1846, entre 1848 e 1874 desempenhou as funções de Agente Consular e Cônsul da França.
