Genoa, Girolamo Bartoli. 1585.

This work has had many editions, having been edited several times in Italy: Genoa 1589; Venice 1592; Milan 1616; Verona 1642. It has also been translated into the main European languages: French, 1595, re-edited in1601; English by Edward Blount, 1600; Latin 1602; Spanish by por Luís de Bavia, 1610 (who changed the parts where Conestaggio shows hostility against Spain); and again into French in 1680, reprinted in 1695.

The author describes the way the king of Spain, Filipe II, became the king Filipe I of Portugal. Conestaggio narrates the events that led up to it, mainly the crusade in Africa of king D. Sebastião and his death in the battle of Alcácer Quibir; the battle of Alcântara between the troops of D. António and of the Duque of Alba; and the defeat of the English fleet in the Azores.

The author started his business in Lisbon from 1576 to 1582, thus being a privileged witness of the historical events he describes. As for the battle of Alcácer Quibir, it may have been based on information from D. João da Silva, who accompanied D. Sebastião into battle as ambassador of king Filipe II. This led to some, wrongfully, saying that the author was D. João.

The authorship of this work to D. João da Silva, 4th Count of Portalegre, made by Inocêncio from some vague references by D. Francisco Manuel de Melo and Gracián is misconceived. Conestaggio is a notable historian and poet and it was his independent stance, visible both in this work and in the History of Flanders Wars, that probably led his opponents to come up with this lie.

The historian Queiroz Veloso in his work about D. Sebastião (p. 316) confirms the authorship of Conestaggio and considers that the author having as source D. João values the work. The researches carried out by Giacinto Mnuppela on Conestaggio, published in 1957, 1960 and 1984, definitely solved the issue of the authorship in favour of the Italian.

The author displeased Spanish and Portuguese, having been certain parts of his work disputed by Jerónimo Mendonça in his book Jornada de África, where he answers to Hieronymo Franqui and others.

Girolamo Conestaggio (Genoa ca. 1530 – Genoa or Amsterdam ca. 1618) was a trader, diplomat, poet and historian.
