Depois de uma breve passagem pela Ordem de Santo Agostinho, no Mosteiro de Cónegos Regulares de Roncesvales, foi professor em Salamanca e posteriormente a convite de D. João III tornou-se professor catedrático da Universidade de Coimbra, de 1538 a 1555, onde o seu ensino influenciou os primeiros jesuítas.
