A outra razão para criar esta obra foi porque nesta época, segundo o autor, existia um desconhecimento sobre a formação dos tecidos e das fibras dos corpos orgânicos e a capacidade de vivificar a matéria. Para tal o autor estudou não só as partes duras (o invólucro testáceo), mas também o hábito exterior destes animais e as circunstâncias peculiares de sua morada (sic) a que hoje chamamos habitat. Algumas das entradas, ou fichas científicas nesta obra, são descobertas e classificações científicas de novas espécies com recolhas efectuadas pelo próprio autor.
