He took an interest in the mathematical sciences and was praised by Johann Bernoulli for his Essai de perspective. In 1715, he visited London as part of a Dutch delegation and met both King George I and Isaac Newton, Gravesande was involved in a public controversy over whether the German inventor Johann Bessler, known as Councillor Orffyreus, had created a genuine perpetual motion machine.
