Fotógrafo e gravador, com formação de pintura. Foi uma figura central e pioneira nos primórdios do desenvolvimento da fotografia francesa, membro fundador da Sociedade Heliográfica, em 1851, e membro da Sociedade Francesa de Fotografia de 1857 a 1882. Notabilizou-se no campo da fotografia, tendo sido o inventor do processo da heliogravura, que apresentou pela primeira vez em 1854 e permitiu a divulgação com grande qualidade de fotografias de obras de arte, monumentos e paisagens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBaldus foi também um dos pioneiros da fototipia (passagem da fotografia para chapas tipográficas através do processo fotográfico) imitando com total perfeição as antigas chapas metálicas abertas a talhe-doce, tal como vemos no frontispício decorativo ao gosto quinhentista que abre esta obra.
