Manuel I em 1520, o seu primeiro titular foi LuÃ­s Homem. Este cargo foi atribuÃ­do por nomeaÃ§Ã£o rÃ©gia atÃ© 1606, ano em que foi vendido por Filipe II a tÃ­tulo hereditÃ¡rio ao 5Âº Correio-mor LuÃ­s Gomes da Mata Coronel, em 1641 foi confirmado por El Rei D. JoÃ£o IV em Morgado para todos os descendentes. Finalmente em 1797, o cargo hereditÃ¡rio de Correio-Mor foi extinto por D. Maria I. O Estado reivindicou para si o monopÃ³lio dos correios, a famÃ­lia Sousa Coutinho que o deteve durante quase 200 anos, recebeu como Ãºltima recompensa benefÃ­cios pecuniÃ¡rios, a promoÃ§Ã£o na carreira militar e o tÃ­tulo de MarquÃªs de Penafiel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo Museu de Arte Antiga de Lisboa existe um retrato, de autor anÃ³nimo, do 6Âº Correio-mor, AntÃ³nio Gomes da Mata.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNota bibliogrÃ¡fica: Â«NÃ£o vem na Biblioteca Lusitana nem no Catalogo das [...] Este testamento Ã© o mais completo contraste com as suspeitas que alguÃ©m pretendia lanÃ§ar sobre a fÃ© do Correio-Mor, como se mostra de um documento que existe no Museu BritÃ¢nico, biblioteca Egertoniana, cÃ³dice nÂº 1133, Tomo 3Âº, fÃ³lio 158, e que segundo o extrato dado por Figanier e no respectivo CatÃ¡logo a pÃ¡gina 222, Ã© uma PetiÃ§Ã£o de CristÃ³vÃ£o de Sousa Coutinho senhor da Casa de BaiÃ£o em Portugal para o lugar de Correio mÃ³r fundando a sua pretensÃ£o em ter casado sem dote com a filha maior de Manuel de Gouveia, jÃ¡ falecido sem filho varÃ£o, e Ãºltimo da sua famÃ­lia o qual tinha este ofÃ­cio. AntÃ³nio Gomes da Matta, tinha o lugar, mas como era hebreu, julgava que era conveniente que este o conservasse, etc. || O ofÃ­cio de Correio mor foi dado por Filipe 2Âº a LuÃ­s Gomes da Mata, e depois foi confirmado por El Rei D. JoÃ£o IV em Morgado para ele, e todos os seus descendentes. No ano de 1712 era Luis Victorio de Sousa Coutinho o 5Âº Correio mor do Reino, que vivia solteiro. Duarte de Sousa Coutinho 4Âº Correio mor do Reino que casou com D. Isabel Caffaro [filha do MarquÃªs D. Until 1606, the king nominated the High-Courier, but then Philip II sold the position as a hereditary title to the 5th High-Courier, LuÃ­s Gomes da Mata Coronel. In 1641 this was confirmed by His Highness King JoÃ£o IV, declaring that all the male firstborns were to inherit the title and position. Finally in 1797, Queen Maria I declared the hereditary position extinguished.
