Pereceu nesta luta o próprio Coge Sofar e D. The Life of the Portuguese Vice-Roy of India Dom João de Castro, written by demand of Jacinto Freyre de Andrade, was printed the first time by order of his grandson, Bishop Francisco de Castro, in Lisbon, in 1651 (13 years before this English edition with the patronage of Queen Catherine of England, a Portuguese princess married to King Charles II).

Illustrated with engraved portrait of D. João de Castro, and his coat-of-arms. Engraved plate hors-text (p. 36-37) reproduces the Altar of the Apostle S. Thomas in Meliapor, and its inscriptions in Sanskrit language, which already existed at the time of the Portuguese arrival in India. A proof of Christianity not related to colonial era. Also a fine metal engraving map in double folio (between pages 72 and 73) not included in the Portuguese editions, depicting the Fortress of Diu.

This work had a later Latin edition in 1727. Work on the war and siege of the Indian city of Diu and the defeat of the Army and Muslin Fleet, which is one of the most celebrated heroic deeds of the Portuguese in India. The Second Siege of the Portuguese fortress of Diu, between April and November of 1546, laid by the forces of the Sultanate of Gujarat, commanded by Khwaja Safar, merchant and lord of Surat was of undeniable importance to the Portuguese 'State of India'. It defined part of the government of Vice-Roy D. João de Castro (1545-1548) and represented the last Gujarati attempt to retake the fortress of Diu, first taken by the Portuguese in 1535.

Includes an account of the battles of Ormuz between the Turks and the Arabs. D. João de Castro (1500-1548) was a naval officer and later the Viceroy of Portuguese India. In 1538 he embarked on his first voyage to India, arriving in Goa and immediately starting the defence of Diu. Castro was responsible for the overthrow of Mahmud, King of Gujarat, whose interests threatened the Portuguese control of Goa coast. His voyages took him to the coasts of Arabia, and this biography contains many details about the Arabian Peninsula, especially about Aden and the sea route to Mecca, of which he made a graphical survey (vide Roteiro and Tabuas Mar Roxo). Castro died in Goa in 1548 and was initially buried there, but his remains were exhumed and transferred to Portugal.

Referências Bibliográficas | Bibliographic References:

Barbosa Machado Vol. II, 465; Inocêncio III, 239; Graesse I, 118; Atabey, 462 (1651 Portuguese ed.).

Â
