He was considered by Napoleon to be one of the seven greatest military commanders in history. He first distinguished himself during the Siege of Vienna in 1683, under the command of the Duke of Lorraine. He was appointed colonel of the Kufstein Dragoon Regiment, and then in 1685 he was appointed major-general. He took part in the conquest of Budapest in 1686, and in 1687, in command of a cavalry brigade, he made an important contribution to the great victory of Mohács on 12 August against the Turks, and was promoted to lieutenant general. On 6 September 1688, he suffered his first combat wound, a severe wound to the knee caused by a musket bullet. He took part in the Nine Years' War, which ended in an inconclusive result. During this period he suffered a head wound at the siege of Mainz in 1689. Promoted to General of Cavalry, he helped to reduce the defeat of Victor Amadeus at Staffarda and was promoted to Field Marshal. In 1697, he was given supreme command of the imperial forces and, as early as 11 September 1697, won the great victory of Zenta against the Turks. His most famous achievements came during the War of the Spanish Succession, between 1701 and 1711, where he won the victories of Carpi on 9 July 1701, Chiari on 1 September of the same year, the attack on Cremona and the battle of Luzzara on 15 August 1702. In 1703 he was appointed President of the Imperial War Council. On 13 August 1704, together with the English general Duke of Marlborough, he won the famous victory at Blenheim; on 7 September 1706 he defeated the French troops besieging Turin and was appointed Governor of Milan. On 22 October 1708, he conquered Lille, where he was severely wounded; on 11 September 1709, he contributed decisively to the victory of Malplaquet and the conquest of Mons on 21 October; finally, he played a decisive role in the peace negotiations which culminated in the treaties concluded in 1714 at Baden and Rastatt.

With the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, the Austrian Empire was free to resolve the Turkish threat and Prince Eugenius defeated the Turks at the Battle of Petrovaradin on 5 August 1716, at the Battle of Belgrade on 16 August 1717 and conquered the city on the 24th of the same month. Finally, his work as a diplomat was remarkable, and having commanded armies almost to the end of his life, he was a mentor to the future King Frederick II of Prussia.

Referências/References:

Gonçalves Rodrigues, I, 690.

Nepomuceno, 1929.

Inocêncio VII, 423.

https://garimpodoslivros.com.br/products/vida-e-aca-oens-militares-do-serenissimo-senhor-eugenio-francisco-de-saboya
