The commission set sail on the frigate Congress in Norfolk, towards Rio de Janeiro, where it arrived in December 1817 and where it remained until the beginning of February of the following year. Brackenridge provides an enthusiastic description of Rio, studies manners and customs, provides statistics and comments on the political situation. SÃ£o Paulo, Santa Catariana and Rio Grande do Sul are described in a separate chapter. The work provides, in more than a hundred pages, important and accurate details about the country.
