João VI dando continuidade às acções de Portugal para estender as fronteiras do Brasil até ao Rio da Prata, tinha enviado para o sul a «Divisão de Voluntários Reais» comandada pelo general Carlos Frederico Lécor, que conseguiu tomar Maldonado e ocupar Montevideu, em 1817.
